Freddie Mercury, Nutmeg and Other Random Things from Zanzibar

JAMBO! After spending Christmas in Lusaka we flew to Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. We took a 2-hr ferry to Zanzibar and spent a week on the north end of the island. Pictures really tell most of the story. It's pretty amazing. We spent a little time in Stone Town which is historically known for the slave trade. We snorkeled in crystal clear water, ate some really bad pizza (that had baked beans on it), celebrated our one year anniversary by falling asleep at 9:30 (new years eve). On one of our last days on the island we toured a spice plantation. We learned just a little swahili during our stay. Jambo means hello...

This is the beach bar at the very nice hotel (next door to ours). We spent a couple afternoons here. We got to know a television talkshow host from Norway. Kevin led an impressive sing-along of Oasis - "Wonderwall". It proves you can be anywhere and people still know (most) of the words.

A guide on the tour made us all kinds of "jewelry" out of banana leaves. He even showed me where to find lipstick in the wild...so I got that going for me.
